Tucker Carlson may have been the Outnumbered man on Fox News Thursday afternoon, but as the sole liberal on the panel Kirsten Powers was definitely “outnumbered” ideologically. During a debate about the thousands of children who have fled their Central American homes and now reside in U.S. detention centers, Powers questioned Carlson’s Christian morality, asking, “Have you read the Bible?”
Listening to what her co-hosts were saying, Powers said that what Republicans want to do in terms of deporting the children is “the opposite of humanitarian.” Rather than just being “hawkish,” she said the idea of sending children back to violent countries is “un-American.”
“So you’re saying the United States has an obligation to anyone who’s suffering around the world and wants to come here and be supported by you and me?” Carlson asked. He and the rest of the women on the panel jumped all over Powers when she described the United States as a “refuge” for the rest of the world.
“So I have a moral obligation to share my earnings and my country with people I’ve never met before because they are suffering?” Carlson asked Powers.
“Are you a Christian?” Powers asked in response. “Have you read the Bible?”
“This is not a theocracy!” Carlson shot back. “Our country is not run according to Christian precepts.” While he said the government has no moral Christian obligation to help refugees, Powers said because he was bringing his own taxes into the equation, it should be something he considers on a personal level.
“They don’t have a moral right to American tax dollars,” Carlson said of the refugees.
Kimberly Guilfoyle weighed in on Carlson’s side, saying, “you cannot just say if you’re a Christian” then you should “let everybody come in and break the law.” Rather, there should be a way for these people to “seek asylum legally.”
When Guilfoyle said the refugees should be able “make their case,” Powers explained that “what Republicans want to do is make it so they don’t have a chance to make their case. They want them to be turned away at the border.”
